Overview
Glenkirk’s Respite Program provides short-term, intermittent care for children and adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities within their family home setting. This program allows primary caregivers temporary relief from the stress and responsibilities of providing constant care enabling the caregiver to avoid burnout and continue supporting their loved one in the home. Glenkirk may also provide respite care in emergencies when an unplanned event results in the unavoidable absence of the caregiver.
The Process
Families enroll through a streamlined application process, which includes gathering information about the need for respite services and documentation of a qualifying disability. Families can enroll multiple workers to meet their scheduling and support needs. Once in the program, families are assisted in enrolling the worker of their choice. Glenkirk will oversee application, enrollment, training, and background check services for each worker, free of charge to the family.
Our Respite Program is no longer taking applicants for this fiscal year. Enrollment will reopen in June 2024.
Respite Program FAQs
Glenkirk has provided Respite Services since 1976.
Glenkirk currently delivers respite services in 22 communities in Lake County & Northern Cook County.
Families are allotted respite care hours in increments of 50 hours at a time, up to a maximum of 360 hours per person, per fiscal year (July 1-June 30).
No, once your hours have been exhausted, you will not be allotted more to use elsewhere.
Families submit monthly timesheets to Glenkirk detailing the date and time of the service provided. Glenkirk issues payments directly to enrolled workers.
Glenkirk conducts quarterly surveys of all families receiving respite services to assess the effectiveness of the services provided.
